ABOUT MICHIGAN IASA

The Indian American Student Association is a space for members to create friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime. We seek to preserve and celebrate Indian and South Asian culture while forging ahead and evolving as a community. The organization allows members to become active in social, cultural, and professional areas. We provide opportunities for students to connect with each other, while building bridges with other student groups and the broader university community. Above all, IASA is an organization that holds the interests of its members at heart, and strives to create a genuine sense of inclusion.

Our Pillars

  • Community Building

Throughout the school year, IASA puts on a wide variety of events that hope to cultivate a sense of community. We hold events like field day, game night, socials, etc to give our members an opportunity to meet, bond, and forge friendships that last a lifetime.

  • Community Service

Community service - IASA focuses on giving back to the community through our community service events. IASA has an annual day of service where our members volunteer for a local initiative. In the past we have done park beautification, park cleanup, etc. Every year, IASA also picks an annual charity to collaborate with. This year we are working with Children’s Hope India! You can find more info here.

  • Social Awareness

IASA hopes to provide an inclusive and safe environment where we can learn from one another and our unique experiences. We hold events that reflect on our Indian culture and promote ways to improve within South Asian and American communities. Past events include social issues in Bollywood movies discussion, mental health workshops, anti-racism workshops, etc.

  • Culture

IASA is known to put on one of the largest student run shows on campus - our Annual Cultural Show. Here we give members the opportunity to learn, participate, and perform in the show which showcases different styles of Indian dances like Bhangra, South Indian, Legends, and so on. OUR HISTORY

OUR HISTORY

Founded in 1983, IASA serves to promote various aspects of Indian culture and heritage through an assortment of events that raise political, social, and cultural awareness, as well as fulfill goals aimed at community building, service, and professional development. Furthermore, IASA strives to build a network of South Asian students as well as develop connections within the broader campus community. In 1997 IASA established the Gandhi Day of Service, an event credited with mobilizing over 250 University students and allowing them to participate in community service activities throughout Southeast Michigan in the name of peace and unity. This day is now a national day of community service observed in over 35 states. One of the most anticipated and highly regarded IASA events is the annual charity Cultural Show. The show aims to preserve Indian culture through a fusion of dance, music, theatre, and art, while actively giving back to the community, culminating in the largest student-run production in North America.
